I am aware that this blog turns up among the top searches for Google when you search for "Areng Poblete."

I have no information on him here. This is my only post about him and the blog entry isn't even about him, it's about the old mansion on P. Montoya Street.

I appreciate people leaving comments but I do hope when you decide to call people names that you have the guts to stand behind your statements. Because when you leave nasty yet anonymous comments, your arguments will sound weak to me.

I do not blog about politics because it's completely alien to me. There are many things I will never understand about it. I only blogged about politics in April/May because I wanted (bordering on desperate) for people to vote Richard Dick Gordon for president.

I have heard stories about the current mayor but I do not publish them here because they are not my first-hand experience. They are rumors. These stories will continue to remain rumors until someone, anyone, who truly knows what's going on, tells people what he/ she knows. And that someone should be willing to stand behind his or her statements.

That said, I do hope that every time there is an election, people really choose leaders who will do their best for the community and the country. I intend to grow old here and stories of people breaking into people's homes and businesses scare the sh*t out of me. When I hear stories of politicians running their own saklay operations, I get a little worried about the town's future. When I see dirty streets, I get a little annoyed.

I want to live in a peaceful town where people work together to achieve common goals.

p.s. I'm sorry if I didn't give the town justice in the article I did for the MY CITY, MY SM section. You can probably tell that story was really written for SM (it's a contest piece). I intend to write more good stories about the town, it's just that, life keeps getting in the way :)

The best of quiet town life and big city amenities *

Movies often portray big city-living as something people must aspire to. In many ways, big city-living can be a major thrill— with the night life, the mix of different people and cultures (with people from different provinces heading to the Metropolitan cities to work and reside) and having all the amenities that you can possibly fit into a busy, swelling city. I spent almost a decade in Manila; attending college at a university in Quezon City and then working in different cities from San Juan to Makati. When you are young, earning good money and having fun, you don’t really think you would ever want a different life or that you would ever desire provincial living.

But people grow old and change. Now that I am 31 and raising my own little family, I cannot imagine living anywhere else in the country but my hometown Silang, Cavite. In 2005, my husband and I packed our bags, closed our little store in Paco, Manila, and headed back home. That was the best decision we made as a couple.

Silang, Cavite, if you travel in the wee hours of the morning, is just 45 minutes away from Manila. On a regular time, on a regular day, the commute can take two hours from Makati. This probably sounds horrendous to some, but for people who enjoy provincial living, this is a blessing. I feel like I am very far from the chaos of Metro Manila and yet still close enough to make the commute in case I miss the madness of the concrete jungle.

Everything a family could ever need is in Silang. The town has a big public market that is open 12 hours a day, seven days a week. My relatives who reside in Manila enjoy going to Silang Public Market to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. There is a world-class golf course in Silang, for those who like to play the sport — the Riviera Golf and Country Club. There are many restaurants in town, from popular fast-food joints, to grill-type restos such as Balinsasayaw Restaurant, and establishments selling lutong-bahay like LZM. There’s really so much this town has to offer that I can’t describe everything in a short article.

For families that are concerned about the education of their children, Silang, Cavite, is the perfect town to live in. Just last summer, three new schools opened in our town: Far Eastern University, Casa Real Montessori and the town’s own public high school. Even without these new schools, the town boasts several public and private schools — from preschool to post-graduate studies. My daughter goes to a progressive preschool that follows the concept of Multiple Intelligence. I have asked around and realized how lucky we are that my daughter can attend such a school for the tuition that we pay. A preschool with the same calibre would cost so much more in Manila. And as if the tuition isn’t already a sweet deal, the school — Elisea School of Creative Learning — accepts recyclables in exchange for deductions in the tuition fee.

What makes living in this town even sweeter is how you can take a 15-minute commute by jeep to Pala-Pala to go to the nearest mall — SM Dasmariñas. Since the mall opened in May 2004, it has filled many of my family’s needs, from birthday cakes to school supplies, furniture and gadgets to even our healthcare needs. I once had a mole on my back removed at a cosmetic center in the mall; it was so convenient that I was in and out of the clinic in an hour. Just several weeks ago, one of the mall’s cinemas was upgraded to 3D. I’m so happy I no longer need to make the trip to Manila to watch 3D movies. We took our daughter to see both Shrek and Toy Story 3 in SM Dasmariñas’ 3D cinema. Both times, we saw several friends in line to watch the movies in 3D. The mall has really become a weekend destination for families in Silang.

With SM nearby, I can enjoy my quiet town living without feeling like something could be missing in my life as far as dining, entertainment and shopping are concerned.

Why I Love Elisea

My daughter, Nicole, attends Kindergarten at the Elisea School of Creative Learning, the grade school arm of Cavite Institute. The tuition is pretty steep compared to several preschools in town but I love it there.

One of these days I will write a guide on how to choose a good preschool in my mommy blog but today, I really want to discuss what happened in Nicole's school. When I brought Nicole to school, one of her teachers approached me because she said they were concerned about an incident that Nic shared with her classmates. Because yesterday was a Monday, the kids in class were asked to share what they did over the weekend. Nicole told the story of a "bad man" and "barilan". The teacher said they asked Nicole if she had seen a movie and Nic answered- no, there really was a man who was firing his gun.

So I told the teacher about what happened last Monday- we woke up at 2AM to a knucklehead shouting at the top of his lungs and firing his gun in the air in the next street. We really couldn't see the man but we could hear him. I was so scared I told Jay we should transfer to the bedroom downstairs. Then we heard a car drive off and then there was silence. We went downstairs and went back to sleep.

The teacher said they just wanted to know what happened so that they can help Nicole process her thoughts and feelings about the incident.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a preschool for your child. For me, knowing the teachers genuinely care about what my child is going through is a big PLUS.

My daily 5K walk has been replaced by a 1K walk to go to the Zagu stand to get Grande Caffe Latte with additional pearls. Oh lord. I feel the sugar converting to fat and crawling to my arms to become permanent residents.

Is BPI the worst place to do banking in Silang, Cavite?

Today we went in the bank and was sixth in line at the teller. The line did not move for 40 minutes.

We don't do a lot of banking with BPI but the several times we were there it always took us a long time to finish our transaction. I don't know what gives. There must be something they can do to improve things. Is their baking system slow? Do they need to add tellers? Maybe the staff that handle new accounts/remittance can help out during busy hours (like what they do at BDO)?

I probably wouldn't be annoyed if I didn't know how much more convenient it is to do business with BDO. With BDO I'm always in and out of the bank in 30 minutes; some days I only have to stay at the bank 10-15 minutes. Plus BDO has longer banking hours (8:30AM-5:30PM). BPI opens at 9:30PM and closes at 4:30PM.

Can you imagine if you had to do a lot of baking with BPI and have to spend an hour each week in the bank?

I just don't think it's right for establishments to waste people's time. Tsss.

While having lunch at Jollibee, my daughter saw a yellow dinosaur mascot dancing at the next street. There was loud music blaring from that area so I got curious too. I didn't have my camera with me so I convinced my daughter that we should go home to get the camera first and just go back to take a look at the dino. When we went back, the dino was no longer around :-( So, it turns out the dino was part of the opening ceremony of the new Pandayan Booshop at the Plaza Libertad in Silang Cavite.

We went inside to have a look at the store. I was so stoked to find scrapbooking materials :-) Yay! Yay! I never got to finish Nicole's toddler book which I started when she was 2. She's turning 5 this year. Ack. I'm going back next week to buy art supplies. I want to change Nicole's scrapbook because it's ugly :-P

Nicole was so excited, she wanted to buy all kinds of stuff at the store. Good thing she agreed to just buy a small art set. The art set was only P20 but because today is opening day, the store manager gave Nic a Pikachu lollipop. The cashier gave me a free pen too :-)

I suck at documenting the sights and the vibe of this town. Lately, I've been leaving my camera a lot at home because I usually just want to be 'in the moment' and not have to take photos. I failed to photograph the changes that happened to one important landmark in the town plaza through the years and now it is gone.

Another store from my childhood has closed shop. I really thought Ady's School Supplies on V. Toledo St., Silang Cavite would be there forever. The shop is now closed and has been replaced with a gift shop and a food cart.

I swear, I remember the old glass cabinets and how you had to step on wooden platforms to buy candy at the Ady's store in the 80s. I have seen the many changes they did to the store and the house through the decades but Ady's was a store I knew I could find whatever it is I needed for school or personal projects.

Jay thinks the gift shop is still Ady's. I have to check.

Half of the space now has Kerrimo. A food cart that sells french fries and other snacks on top of a soda cup. Brilliant idea but I still feel a little sad about Ady's closing. Oh well, change is supposed to be good right?

I took a photo of my Kerrimo cup when I got home. Next time when I go out, I'll bring my camera and take tons of photos of the town.

We usually have dinners at home at 4PM. Yesterday, our stomachs were grumbling by 9PM so Jay and I decided we'll have snacks at Chowking. Chowking was already closed so we decided to eat at Country Side Steak House. It's a newly-opened restaurant at M.H. Del Pilar St. Silang Cavite (near Mother Nature Tutorial Center).

Jay had Pork Steak with Sarsi. I had a clubhouse sandwich with cherry lemonade. Our total bill was P 250. I have no complaints. I can make both the clubhouse and the pork steak at home but on days I don't want to cook and I don't want to eat at Jollibee, Country Side is good enough.

Jay and I were looking for something to eat last Saturday and thought of trying out this new restaurant.
Cantata is a Korean-owned restaurant on J.P. Rizal St. right beside the old CI main building (near Silangan Savings Bank).

The verdict: try the rice meals, skip the burger. The fries tasted like they were cooked in days-old oil. I can make better burgers at home using Monterey beef patties. I liked the Mixed seafood though so maybe I'll eat that next time.

When Jolog Meets Fancy Palitaw and "Mint"

If there is anything I learned in my 31 years on earth, it is this- you are who you are. I've long accepted I am jolog. I know what I know; I like what I like. I try to be a better person everyday but I cannot pretend to be something else. Lumalabas talaga ang kajologan!

Yesterday, Jay and I decided to try this small restaurant we keep seeing at the highway-Abundant Place. We thought it was some diner.

A waiter set up our table while we were looking at native products at the small store.

When our table was finally set up with a native place mat, a cup of hot chocolate & a water goblet covered with fancy cloth, we asked for a menu. It turned out they only serve suman and palitaw :p We realized- oh, okay, this is a merienda place for Manila people, those who do not find suman in their palengkes.

We had palitaw. I'm jolog and not very sophisticated when it comes to food so I like my palitaw chewy with coconut and sugar just like how it's served during babang luksa. lol. We were served fancy palitaw- a soft palitaw roll, with coconut meat, choco syrup and rice crispies. I was hungry and finished it off. Jay only ate half of his. (Jay had hotdog at Jollibee after. haha.)

Here's where my jologness kicks in-- there was a tiny cup with 3 leaves in it. Jay asked me what it was. Jologs me assumed it was mint (you know like in those fancy dining shiz you see on TV. haha) so I urged him- "It's just mint. Go on, chew on it!". Jay didn't want to. I was being brave. I thought, you know what, we're here for the experience, might as well go all out. (Go for the gold is my new motto.) I pop 2 leaves in my mouth and chew-chew-chew, while thinking- this is how the fancy people eat in their fancy restaurants. heehee. Jay asks me what it tastes like and I tell him- "e di mint."

As we were about to leave, the waiter comes out with a pot of water and tells us- "meron pa po yan" ("there's more") and proceeds to pour hot water in the tiny cup. Jay and I looked at each other and I thought- Oh my dud (as Nic would say). The leaves were still in my mouth! They were fresh Terragon tea leaves! haha. Kaloka.

After the waiter left, I spit the leaves into my cup and had my tea. And that is how my birthday breakfast went :)

I'm still contemplating if I will join this event. I have arthritis right now (too much info!) and not sure I'd be comfortable walking 5K. Plus I am not exactly fit :p

Four years ago, I promised myself I would train for and join a marathon but never got around to doing them (Ah, story of my life- making promises I can't keep). Maybe I should sign up for the event and start training tomorrow? The event is only a week away but it's a fun run so maybe 1 week is a good enough training time? Am I going to kill myself? :D

MIA Again

I'm sorry if I went MIA again. It's hard trying to balance my freelance writing job with doing home chores and running 3 blogs.

Last week there was a gay boxing competition at the town plaza which I missed. It was raining, I had no one to leave my 3-year-old daughter with, yaddi, yadda (I'm just making up excuses as you can probably tell). But when I saw the banner announcing the boxing match, I took a mental note of the schedule for the Ms. Gay Silang Diosa ng Kalikasan Beauty Pageant. The pageant will be held on June 6 and I'll make sure I'll be there :) Yay!

Some news: RJ Poblete's tattoo shop is now closed. He will re-open the shop at a different location. When that happens, I'll tell you when and where.

Multiple Intelligence Preschool

The Elisea School of Creative Learning is the only school (that I know of) in this town that uses the concept of Multiple Intelligence in educating preschoolers.

The nursery classroom has two sinks, its own toilet, a baby slide, wooden blocks and other toys. The teachers use modules that they created to meet the needs of preschool students.

They don't use a numerical grading system and there is no honor roll. Measurement of skills is more qualitative than quantitative.

The tuition is pretty steep compared to ther preschools in Silang, Cavite but I really think this is the best preschool in town.

Chowking- Silang Soon To Open

My dad can't wait for this store to open. He loves Chow Fan rice. I like Tofu with Pork :) The store is on J.P. Rizal street, right beside the Philippine National Bank- Silang branch and opposite the catholic church.

Town Fiesta

Silang Cavite's Catholic Fiesta is on Monday- February 2.

The people usually celebrate for three days, from February 1 - February 3. You can start visiting houses on February 1 and expect to be fed :)

I'm looking forward to the parade that will happen on Monday. That's always fun. At least 15 marching bands EVERY year. Growing up in this town and not being allowed to go out much as a kid and teenager, that was something I always looked forward to. I live for that parade.

RJ Poblete decided to quit the rat race to open a tattoo shop again. I don't know how long he's been doing tattoos but he did my first tattoo in 1996.

Starting today ( January 10, 2009) until the town's Catholic fiesta (February 2, Nuestra Señora de Candelaria) the PNP band will perform at the Patio Medina every Saturday at 7PM .

Christmas Tree 2008: White & Silver

I know it's January already but I forgot to take a picture of the town's Christmas tree last month :p

I was able to attend the tree-lighting ceremony last month. Nothing special. They had different church choirs singing. After about ten minutes my family and I decided- "OK, nothing to see here, let's go home". It was a crazy cold night and the show wasn't worth getting a cold for.

Eye Sore

I really think the Patio Medina memorial is an eyesore. The top doesn't even look finished (click on the photo to get a better look). And look at that lamp on the right post. Tabingi! Grunt. What a waste of money.

I'm also scared that someday one of those two huge vases will just fall on someone's head. I know they're cemented but still...

Why can't we build simple, classic memorials or really magnificent, INSPIRING ones? :(

I really think this house deserves a blog post.

This is Mayor Clarito "Areng" Poblete's house. My daughter, who is 2, thinks a princess lives in it. When we go biking (well I walk and push her on her trike) she always asks to pass by the "Princess House".

I would love to see how it looks in the inside and what furnitures they have. I think this house was built in the 70s which means at that time it was probably the most magnificent house in town. Silang, Cavite used to be a modest town with many families earning a living from farming.

Another One Bites the Dust

This is exactly why I put up this blog. I want to document all the changes in this town before people forget what this town was like when they were kids; before I forget what this town was like when I was a kid.

It seemed to me like the Dela Rosa Magnolia Ice Cream Shop & the adjacent Silang Restaurant (located at the Silang Town Plaza across the catholic church) would be open FOREVER. But early this month the ice cream shop closed its doors and now major renovations are underway to turn the commercial space into a Ministop Convenience Store. A couple of months ago, the restaurant was closed to make way for a Dunkin' Donuts.

When I was in high school, I would go to Silang Restaurant with my mom and my brother to eat pancit and siopao.

During the power crisis in the mid-90's the Magnolia Ice Cream shop would have promos of 'Buy 1, Take 1' on the ice cream products but we never could buy them because ice creams used to come in much bigger tubs and since there were daily brown-outs, we didn't have any place to keep them.

The ice cream shop survived the power crisis of the 90s. And both the shop and the restaurant survived many, many years...but now they're closed and being replaced by other businesses. I need to find photos of the old establishments :(

I promise to take photos of the new establishments.

Fiesta Baratillo

Every year, at least two weeks before the town Fiesta, the local government closes V. Toledo St. in the town proper to make way for tiangges. I look forward to this every year because there are lots of interesting stuff that you can buy. By the end of January, it gets really cold in this part of the town so it's nice to walk around the streets because you won't get all sweaty.
